Greek Paximadia Recipe


  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 Tbs Crisco shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup orange juice and 1 tsp orange peel
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups chopped almonds
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp anise flavoring
  • 7-8 cups flour


These toasted cookies with a distinct flavor of almonds and citrus are similar to the traditional Italian biscotti cookies which are best dunked with your favorite Greek coffee because of their hard texture.

In a mixing bowl blend well softened butter, vegetable oil, Crisco shortening, and sugar until creamy. (About 10 minutes). Add eggs one at a time. Add flour and baking powder, alternating with orange juice and peel. Add anise and blend until you make soft dough.

Separate dough into 6 equal loaves. Mark them like biscotti and bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes.

Cut them where you scored them and then lay flat and bake for 15 more minutes until golden brown.
